Welcome to Journey to Growth, an initiative of Finesse Travel Club. At Finesse, we are more than just a travel club. We are firm believers in the transformative power of education, and we understand that not all education happens within the four walls of a classroom. That’s why we’ve launched Journey to Growth – to bring the classroom to the world and the world to the classroom.
Cultural Capital
– A term introduced by French thinker Pierre Bourdieu in the 1970s – refers to the social and cultural knowledge that can help a student make progress. It is the essential knowledge that students need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said, and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
We believe that through cultural experiences, children in underserved communities can gain that “cultural capital”, leading to better grades and higher test scores. The more students learn, the greater equipped they are to interpret the world around them. This accumulation of cultural capital – the acquisition of knowledge – is key to social mobility.
However, students from disadvantaged backgrounds often receive less exposure to the ideas that are likely to enable them to accrue cultural capital. That’s where we come in. Journey to Growth funds educational field trips locally and across the country, sponsors annual trips to Washington D.C., and provides college tours to Florida colleges and universities, as well as HBCUs across the nation. Through these experiences, we aim to plug the gaps and ensure that all students have the opportunity to build up their cultural capital, and consequently, their power in society.
Now, we invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you’re a member of Finesse Travel Club or a generous donor, your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of countless students. Together, we can help them solve cultural problems with cultural facts, just as they would solve math problems with math facts.
Let’s empower the next generation with the gift of cultural capital. Join us, and let’s journey to growth together.
